1798/4 In April 1798 the Swift was overtaken by a succession of violent typhoons in the China Seas, which scattered and disabled many of the large convoy of merchantman returning to England from Macao. The Swift was last seen making signals of distress, and is presumed to have founded.
From BL Add. 35161 the papers of Rev. Joseph Hunter "In December 1796 he was appointed Commander of the Swift and in July 1797 Captain of the resistance of 44 guns and in a few days to the Trident of 60 guns. He was, however, lost on the Swift.... Capt. Hayward's charts of the voyage in the Pandora and of the Banda Seas were published by Mr. Dalrymple"
From Gentleman's Magazine May 1813: the obituary of Francis Hayward, and references to his son, Thomas. "At the beginning of the French revolution, he [Thomas] served on board the Constant, from which ship he removed to the Diomede, then on the East India station, when he again suffered shipwreck, the Diomede having struck upon a rock not laid down in any chart, at the entrance of the harbour of Trincomalee." Joseph Hunter was brother-in-law to Thomas Hayward.
