Duchy of Courland's ships will be distinguished by the prefix DKS - Duchy of Kourland's Ship - before ship´s name. These abbreviations will help distinguish similar ship´s names between nations and government warships from privateers or privately-owned merchantmen.

The list includes only such ships as carried guns, and are known by name. There were many others, and there are records of about 150 ships during the period 1638-1698, mostly built at Windau or Libau. Among the ships whose names are unknown there said to have been one of 100-guns and two of 80-84 captured by the Swedens at Windau in 1659, besides one 100-guns and one of 60 burnt on the stocks.
